Insights into Landscape Astrophotography and Capturing Celestial Beauty

July 24, 2024

Landscape astrophotography is so much more than just aiming a camera at the stars; it’s about integrating compelling foregrounds and employing creative techniques to capture the majesty of Earth's landscapes with the awe-inspiring cosmos in just one photo.

Some of my favorite photos I've ever taken have involved capturing images of the night sky within the context of a scenic landscape. Three of my favorite photos of all time are landscape astrophotography:

  • Edge of Creation: The warm but dangerous glow of lava meeting the ocean in the foreground frames our view of the Milky Way galaxy.
  • Hyperspace: A photo taken at the perfect time of night with just enough light to see the landscape but not take away from the grandeur of the night sky.
  • Neorise: A once-in-a-lifetime comet and the north star in the sky with the backdrop of the Haleakala crater.

These shots not only resulted in not only beautiful fine art astrophotography, they also taught me some valuable lessons. With the right location, timing, and equipment, photographers can create breathtaking images that inspire awe and wonder.

One of the most epic ideas I had for an image and it really just kind of happened so I had to figure out a way to pull this one off. If you look closely, you can also see the international space station in the upper corner of this one too

Location, Location, Location: Edge Of Creation

Photography is not just about finding the most compelling subject matter but also what you, as an artist, can do with it.

When it comes to night sky photography, yes, you can point your camera skyward and capture some beautiful images. However, the best landscape astrophotography takes advantage of incredible nature and landscape foregrounds to frame, give context, and add depth to the image.

With the Edge of Creation, I knew I wanted to take photos of the lava flows slowly seeping into the ocean - such a cool and singular image from nature - but I also knew I wanted to do something more with it.

After experimenting with different times of the day and evening, the awesome glow of the lava at night time with the starry sky above jumped out at me as a stunning opportunity for a photo.

Photographer's Tip:
When you find a patch of nature and slice of the sky you like try a multitude of ways to photograph it to see if it sparks an idea for a truly epic photo.

Combine Technique & Equipment: Hyperspace

No, this photo isn't AI generated- it's all real. But yes, some special equipment and techniques were used to capture it.

For night sky photography it helps to have a wide-angle lens, a sturdy tripod, and a remote shutter release. It's also important to be comfortable with your camera's manual settings. Figuring out the best astrophotography settings for your environment and your camera will take some trial and error.

And while you can achieve stunning night sky photos in camera, some post processing may be needed to reduce noise, adjust contrast, or correct the white balance, for example.

I've taken several amazing photos at the Secret Beach of Makena using standard equipment and techniques. For this photo I decided to try something different and use a double-exposure.

The brightness of the photo and sense of movement is the result of using two different types exposures for the picture. Long exposure was used to capture more light and a zoom exposure was taken while the camera was zooming out to crate the hyperspace effect.

Photographer's Tip
: Before Photoshop, use different exposure lengths or camera effects to create unique but stunning landscape astrophotography.

Timing Is Everything: Neorise

While the night sky looks stagnant at a glance, the moon waxes and wanes, the stars shift around and comets, asteroids and space stations will fly by occasionally in our orbit.

When planning to take a photo of the night sky in the Haleakala crater in Maui, I knew I wanted to capture the contrast between the desert-looking mountains and the sky above - what I didn't know was how critical my timing of the photo mattered.

In this photo not only do you see the North star shine bright in the middle of the photo, but you also see the comet Neowise which will not visit us again here on earth for another 6,800 years and the International Space Station!

Once I learned of the both the comet and the ISS passing by the Hawaiian skies, I made sure to be there to capture it.

Photographer's Tip
: See if there are any cosmic anomalies coming your way and time your photography sessions around these events.

panoramic view of Haleakala Crater just before sunrise with the Neowise comet on the horizon

This was such a fun image to capture as comet Neowise is visible just over the horizon right before sunrise at Haleakala crater. A full moon is behind me here providing the lighting for the crater in a shot that just kind of all came together. Comet Neowise will not visit us again for 6800 years so very fortunate to have captured this

Hawaii Night Sky Photography

Hawaii is one of the best places on Earth for night sky photography, offering some of the darkest, clearest skies, far from urban light pollution. The islands' high altitude, low humidity, and consistent climate provide ideal conditions for capturing stunning celestial images throughout the year.

If you'd like to see Hawaii's breathtaking night skies for yourself, check out this blog for valuable advice, including choosing the best times and locations for clear skies, preparing with appropriate gear, and using stargazing apps to identify celestial objects.

With fine art astrophotography from Andrew Shoemaker, you can bring the magic of Hawaii's night skies into your home. Each print not only captures the grandeur of the cosmos but also the breathtaking scenery of the islands.
