Best Panorama Photo Sizes For Your Wall Space | Quick Guide
Panoramic photos have become more and more popular in interior design because they are an easy way to transform the look and feel of a room. The size and scale of a well-placed panorama enhance the space while providing or contributing to the design language of the room. Specifically, panoramic photos can:
- Create visual impact as a striking focal point
- Match or supplement the decor of a room
- Provide a more immersive experience
Though panoramas can add a lot to a space, you can't just slap a panoramic on the wall and call it a day, there are different aspect ratios, wall sizes and subject matter considerations.
Panoramic Photograph Aspect Ratios
Most pictures you'll see hung on the wall have an aspect ratio of 3:4 or 4:3 or close to it. So for every three units of measurement on one side of the picture, there will be four units of measurement on the side. An example with easy math would be prints that are 30 inches x 40 inches or vice versa. Panoramic prints elongate one side of the picture and can have various aspect ratios you may see.
1:2 - Standard Panorama: The minimum ratio for a photograph to be considered panoramic.
1:2.5 - Classic Panorama: One of the original aspect ratios used panoramic photographs and still popular today.
1:3 - Super Panorama: One of the most common formats you'll see for panoramas, this format is also preferred for 360-degree photography.
1:4 - Ultra Panorama: Useful for longer subject matter and is a format that is used for VR headsets.
1:5 - Extreme Panorama: Perfect for grand landscapes and architectural readings, this aspect ratio is almost exclusively used for custom fine art prints.
There are panoramic photographs that go beyond the 5:1 ratio, but those are for very specific applications and not seen very often.
Best Panoramic Photos Sizes For Your Wall
Like with hanging any print, start by measuring the total blank space on the wall. Be careful to only measure the part of the wall that's visible in your decor. From there consider a few things when picking the right sized panoramic:
- Viewing distance: The more space there is between the wall and where you'll be looking at the picture, the larger the print you can get.
- Viewing height: Most photos are hung so the center of the print is between 57 inches and 60 inches from the floor
- Clutter: It's suggested to cover between 50% - 75% of the wall space with a standard print, less feels bare more feels cluttered. Panoramas will typically be on the higher side of this suggestion and occasionally be over 75% as part of the overall room design.
With these factors in mind, look at your available space and available panorama sizes to find some sizes that might work:
- 8x20 inches (1:2.5): Classic panoramic size, suitable for landscapes.
- 10x30 inches (1:3): Perfect for wide vistas and scenic views.
- 12x36 inches (1:3): Commonly used for nature and skyline shots
- 16x48 inches (1:3): Ideal for dramatic prints of breathtaking landscapes.
- 20x60 inches (1:3): Excellent for large-scale prints that command attention.
- 24x72 inches (1:3): A larger option for showcasing expansive views.

Choosing Panoramas For Your Space
Landscapes and cityscapes are common applications for panoramas because while the standard 3:4 aspect ratio captures a lot, it doesn't capture the grandeur of nature or the expanse of humanity. When it comes to which is best for your room, I suggest thinking about the following factors:
- Tie the room together or be the shining star - Because panoramas are so big they can be used to unify the look of the room, using the colors and existing themes of the room to compliment it, or it can be used to stand out and demand attention from the surroundings. Think about what you'd like your panorama to do for your design and choose a subject matter that either blends with the environment or wonderfully contrasts it.
- Choose colors carefully - Yes, the subject matter is important but the colors may be even more important. For example, earth tones and pastels will never match, so the color of the subject matter needs to be considered as well. Choose a panorama with colors that either match or blend with the colors in the surrounding room.
- Badly lit panoramas look terrible - The lighting in the room needs to be accounted for because a badly lit print defeats the purpose of putting it on your wall. Will you be relying on natural light? What light sources will be in the room? Asking questions like these before you choose your panorama can help you choose the right size, subject and matte or glossy finishes.
