What Does Mahalo Mean (To Me and My Art)

June 26, 2025

I sign every message the same way, with one word that says it all: mahalo.

But what does mahalo mean to me and the art I create?

Mahalo Defined

In Hawaiian culture, it’s not just a way to say thank you.

It’s a way of seeing the world with respect, gratitude, and reverence for nature, moments, and people.

The Spirit of Mahalo

The spirit of mahalo guides how I photograph—always with intention and appreciation for the land.

It shapes the way I choose to print, finish, and share each piece.

For me, it’s much more than just a sign-off, it's the foundation of how I create, connect, and share my art with the world.

Enchanted Forest

A panoramic scene that caught my eye in an incredible magical forest here on the island of Maui. Walking through this scene feels like you're in a fairytale and I felt a panorama was the only way to capture the essence of it. Photographed with a medium format camera for extra quality and detail.

Sustainable Photography Practices Rooted in Hawaiian Values

Sustainability isn’t just a modern concern in the Hawaiian Islands; it’s a way of life. And Maholo embodies that core value.

In fact, it’s shaped how I approach my work every. single. day.

Hawaiian Values in Every Frame

While mahalo is the foundation of my approach, it’s just one of many Hawaiian values that influence how I live and work.

  1. Mālama ʻĀina (Caring for the Land) I believe that when we honor the land, it gives back in quiet, powerful ways. Rooted in a core Hawaiian value, that belief shapes how I shoot—light on gear, focused on meaning, and always mindful to leave the land as I found it.  Every image you see is made with care and respect for the place it came from.
  2. Aloha ʻĀina (Love for the Land) Aloha ʻĀina means more than just love. It’s also about mindful action. From waiting patiently for hours for the right light conditions to treading gently on sacred or sensitive lands, I work with deep reverence for the landscape and I’m careful to avoid disturbing fragile environments or wildlife when in the field.  That means the artwork you choose from my collection is created with environmental and cultural sensitivity.
  3. Pono (Doing What’s Right) Pono is about integrity and making choices that align with what’s right, not just what’s easy. That’s why I use archival-quality materials such as ChromaLuxe and Lumachrome, which last over 100 years and reduce the need for reprints.  Working with printing companies that offer dry lab printing methods means the prints you receive have been crafted using cleaner and more sustainable methods than traditional chemical-based options.  Ultimately, your print is both long-lasting and thoughtfully made, supporting sustainability without compromising quality.

My Go-To Sustainable Prints for Quality and Longevity

Every print is crafted to endure, both in quality and in feeling, without compromising the world that inspired it.

When it’s time to bring my work to life on paper, I choose materials that respect the earth and reflect the soul of the image.

ChromaLuxe Metal Prints

These prints are created using a process called dye-sublimation.

The image is infused directly into a specially coated aluminum sheet using heat and pressure.

Unlike regular metal prints, ChromaLuxe prints are made out of VOC (Volatile Organic Compound)-free coating, making it a more eco-conscious choice.

  • The vivid finish is perfect for showcasing Hawaii's bold colors.
  • The dry lab process ensures no harsh chemicals are used, and waste is minimal.
  • Fully recyclable, it’s ideal for collectors or designers seeking sustainable options.

The result is a vibrant, high-definition print that’s both durable and lightweight.

Lumachrome Acrylic Prints

The process creates incredible depth and dimensionality, enhancing the image in a way that almost makes it glow. The printing process uses the eco-friendly inkjet process instead of a wet lab so there's no harsh chemicals used to dispose of.  Backings can be FSC-certified or made from recycled materials, offering a more sustainable alternative to standard acrylic options.

These prints require a layered construction that begins with an archival-quality photographic print. This is then face-mounted beneath a crystal-clear acrylic glass using an optically clear adhesive.

  • Offers exceptional clarity, depth, and color vibrancy.
  • With proper care, they are built to last over a century.
  • The elegant finish makes it popular in high-end homes, galleries, and luxury hotels.

Not Sure Which Print to Pick?  Here's My Advice......

Both ChromaLuxe metal and Lumachrome acrylic prints are exceptional, each with their own strengths.

  • For incredible detail and color accuracy- If you're drawn to images like Heaven on Earth, I would recommend Lumachrome acrylic.  Why? The acrylic print offers finer detail across the image and a slightly more accurate color representation.

Kalalau Valley on the island of Kauai is one of the most special places on Earth to me. Just absolutely breathtaking and if you could imagine what heaven must look like, well I think it'd look like this

  • For durability and versatility- Metal prints have really advanced in recent years. They’re ultra-durable, lightweight, and can be displayed almost anywhere.  Opt for ChromaLuxe metal prints when you need flexibility in where your art can be hung.
  • For large-format prints- Size can make all the difference. We can create ChromaLuxe metal prints up to 96 inches, while Lumachrome acrylics can go as large as 120 inches!  For very large, statement-making pieces, Lumachrome may offer the edge in impact.
  • For sustainability- If eco-friendliness is a top priority, ChromaLuxe is the more sustainable of the two.  It’s printed using a dry lab process—no chemicals, minimal water, and lower waste—and uses recyclable aluminum.  Lumachrome, is also an conscious choice if paired with FSC-certified or recycled backings and it’s made to last for decades.

Ultimately, both are premium options I stand by. If you’re ever unsure, feel free to reach out. I’m always happy to help you choose the right print for your space.

Ahinahina

The rare Hawaiian Silversword can only be found on the slopes on Haleakala on Maui and Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa on the Big Island of Hawaii. These incredible plants are endangered and unlike any other plant I've seen. I got caught in a rainstorm up on Haleakala and I thought that the plant looked even more unique with water droplets.
