Experiencing The Island Of Oahu As A Professional Photographer
The island of Oahu has so many special things about it that it's hard to know where to begin describing it. Between the urban, agricultural and natural attractions, there are abundant opportunities for taking amazing photographs. As a professional landscape photographer based in Hawaii, I visit Oahu regularly on photo expeditions and am continually delighted and surprised at the natural beauty that surrounds me.
Beach Photos & Scapes
Oahu has 112 miles or 180 kilometers of general coastline, making it the third largest Hawaiian Island, smaller than Maui (120 miles) and just bigger than Kauai (90 miles), so there's a lot of coastline to choose from for photographs. You'll see a good portion of my photos from Oahu include the beach in some form or another, even if it's not the focal point. The refraction of light off of the water and sand provides a dazzling mix of colors and the serenity the beach naturally gives you makes for a splendid combination for photos.
Mountains & Nature
Blending these elements into one photo can feel very satisfying because you capture three stunning aspects in one photograph. Typically larger in scale, to fit all three elements, these photos also give a sense of the enormity of the beauty of Oahu. My Jurassic series, for example, are all designed to give one a sense of the grandeur that the great Jurassic beasts may have experienced.
Surfing & Water
Surfing and boating have long been a part of the cultural fabric of Oahu. With such a beautiful spot in the Pacific to enjoy, it's no wonder folks love spending time in and around the water. While most of my photographs are of natural landscapes of Hawaii, there are times when a tranquil picture of a boat floating in the Hanauma Bay or a photograph of a surfer gliding across the ocean turned purple from the setting sun are too good to pass up.
